Abstract

The chemist Sidney Gottlieb is considered one of the leading American scientific experts who utilized his expertise in service of American interests, with the support of the highest levels of the US security apparatus. This was in line with the role that the US administration was expected to play following the end of World War II and the onset of the Cold War.  A series of changes in international relations imposed a new reality on the US administration, prompting it to use all available means to counter the Soviet threat.  Sidney Gottlieb played a key role in developing numerous scientific and technological projects and programs used in CIA operations, particularly those involving interrogation, behavioral control, and targeted assassinations.
