Europe witnessed, during the period following the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and its decisions, the subjugation of many countries to foreign rule, without regard for the wishes of their populations or their national aspirations. Consequently, liberal ideas spread widely across the continent, particularly in the small states that had long felt that their rights were usurped as a result of the Congress of Vienna and its decisions. This situation stirred the peoples of these states, leading them to rise up one after another. Among these revolutions was the Belgian Revolution of 1830
