Our translation of this novel aims to convey the spirit of the text rather than its literal wording, taking into account the cultural differences between French and Arabic—differences marked by openness and boldness on one side, and by reserve and taboos, especially regarding sexual vocabulary, on the other.
The term autobiography is a well-known literary genre in world literature. In it, the writer presents the life of a character with real people, dates, and places. The author establishes a kind of contract with the reader, aiming to reveal the person’s life with honest confession, faithfully conveying personal memories to the reader.
Memoir of a Girl, a novel by French author Annie Ernaux, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022, is an autobiographical work published in 2016. It recounts a personal experience the author lived through during the summer of 1958, in which she narrates her first intimate relationship with a man and its lasting impact on her.
