Civic sculpture in the Nabataean and Palmyrene kingdoms is regarded as an important subject that reflects prominent aspects of the artistic, social, economic, and cultural life of both the Nabataean and Palmyrene societies. This study aims to examine selected examples of civic sculptures and analyze their forms and artistic and social significance in light of the environment, society, and cultural relations that contributed to shaping the local artistic tradition.
The study includes representations of men and women. Male figures appeared in various forms, including nude statues and equestrian statues, while female statues reflected several aspects of social life, particularly the social and economic status of women. The study also examines a group of animal sculptures, particularly camels, horses, dolphins, lions, ibexes, and goats, whose representations were associated with the local environment, as well as with religious beliefs and cultural influences.
