The queen mother was a highly influential figure in the political system of ancient Iraq, particularly in the Assyrian and Babylonian civilizations. She held a prominent position within the royal court, deriving her power from being the king's mother, which granted her a role extending beyond the familial sphere to include participation in the administration of state affairs.
The queen mother's role was evident in advising the king, contributing to political decision-making, and overseeing palace affairs. She also played a diplomatic role by receiving foreign delegations and establishing relations with neighboring kingdoms. In some cases, she assumed the role of regent when the king was too young or incapacitated to rule.
Zakutu is considered one of the most prominent queen mothers in Assyrian history. She wielded considerable political influence during the reigns of her son, King Esarhaddon, and later her grandson, Ashurbanipal. She contributed to consolidating the dynasty and ensuring the smooth transfer of power within the ruling family. Other notable figures include Queen Semiramis, wife of the Assyrian King Shamshi-Adad V and mother of King Adad-nirari III, among others. Cuneiform texts and historical documents indicate that the Queen Mother was an important element in the stability of the state, as she contributed to strengthening the legitimacy of the king and maintaining the cohesion of the political system, making her one of the influential figures in the history of ancient Iraq.
