The Repercussions of the Problem of Soviet Nuclear Weapons Inherited in Ukraine

The crisis that erupted in late 2013 was not an isolated event, but rather an extension of the instability and political and military repercussions that Ukraine has witnessed since the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the withdrawal of its nuclear weapons at the time. Ukraine was considered the "custodian" of the nuclear arsenal of the former Soviet Union, and both the Russian Federation and Western countries sought to denuclearize Ukraine. Indeed, this is what happened, especially after a series of agreements and negotiations resulted in the return of nuclear warheads in exchange for international guarantees to protect its national security, which became known as the Budapest Memorandum of 1994.
