The waqf institution was one of the most influential civil and charitable institutions in Islamic civilization, playing a crucial role in supporting public welfare and sustaining educational activities across different historical periods. During the Ottoman Empire, educational endowments reached an advanced level of organization and effectiveness, becoming a fundamental pillar in preserving and developing the educational system. Through dedicated financial resources, waqfs ensured the establishment, maintenance, and continuity of schools, madrasas, libraries, and other educational institutions throughout the vast territories of the empire. This financial independence enabled educational establishments to perform their functions with stability and continuity, regardless of political or economic fluctuations.
This study examines the role of the waqf institution in preserving and developing education during the Ottoman period by analyzing the organizational and financial foundations of educational endowments and their contribution to sustaining educational institutions. It also explores the impact of waqfs on the expansion of scientific and educational activities through the establishment of schools and libraries, the support of scholars and students, and the promotion of intellectual and cultural production. The study adopts a historical-analytical approach by tracing the evolution of educational waqfs and assessing their influence on the educational and scientific landscape of the Ottoman Empire. The research concludes that waqfs constituted one of the most significant factors behind the stability and continuity of the Ottoman educational system and played a vital role in enhancing scientific development and strengthening the status of learning and scholars within Ottoman society.
