مدينة الموصل من مدن العراق المهمة وكان لها دور تاريخي وحضاري وعلمي في الدولة العربية الاسلامية .ومن اهم معالمها الحضارية قلعة الموصل -(باش طابيا)التي انشأت في القرن الثاني للهجرة.
وهي قديمة تقع في الجانب الايسر من مدينة الموصل على ضفة نـهر دجلـة الايسر , وبـنى حـولها الحمدانيون سور في عام 180هـ /796م ثم تعرضت إلى الهدم من قبل البساسيري في عام 450هـ /1058م , واهتم بهذه القلعة الاتابكة حيث انها كانت الحصن الشرقي لدولتهم.
وتعتبر آثار القلعة من المواقع الاثرية في الموصل حيث تعتبر الجزء المتبقي من سور الموصل .
وتعرضت القلعة للاهمال وخاصة بعد 2003م حيث تعرض برج القلعة للسقوط .
وفي عام 2015م تعرضت إلى القصف من قبل تنظيم داعش الارهابي مما ادى إلى اضرار في القلعة.
