This study aims to achieve a deeper understanding of a pivotal historical event in Egyptian-British relations, elucidating how Britain applied the model of "Coercive Diplomacy" against a nominally independent state. This was manifested through the exertion of direct pressure, the threat of military force, and the imposition of mandates upon the King. Furthermore, the study highlights the central role of the British High Commissioner, Sir Miles Lampson, and his ability to dominate political decision-making in Egypt, executing his government's directives with absolute firmness and resolve.
Moving beyond a mere chronological narration of events, the study provides a critical assessment of Lampson’s persona, his strategic decisions, and his crisis management approach. It offers a profound reading of the events by relying on the "Killearn Diaries," in addition to British documents pertaining to that era, exploring the underlying motives for the British conduct and their apprehensions regarding the Axis powers' advance.
The study does not merely present the incident but seeks to provide an analytical framework explaining the true catalysts behind the February 4, 1942 incident and why it became a watershed moment. It posits that this incident constituted a long-term "Strategic Failure" that undermined the foundations of British soft power. Conversely, it eroded the legitimacy of their ally, the Wafd Party, which in turn agitated the military establishment. Consequently, the Egyptian Army became a focal point for revolutionary resentment, paving the way for the 1952 Revolution and the ultimate termination of the British presence.
While the February 4, 1942 incident was considered a victory for coercive diplomacy, this study argues it was a superficial and transient triumph. Britain paid a heavy long-term price, represented by the destruction of the monarchy's legitimacy and the weakening of key political actors, particularly the Wafd Party, which suffered significant embarrassment before its massive popular base. This shift transformed the Egyptian Army into a force hostile to the British presence, making the incident one of the most critical precursors to the 1952 Revolution.
The study concludes that the February 4, 1942 crisis serves as a blatant example of coercive diplomacy in Egypt. It exposed the fragility of Egyptian independence—which was merely formal—and demonstrated the High Commissioner's absolute control over Egyptian domestic affairs and his authority in making fateful decisions. Additionally, the incident highlighted the contradiction in British political discourse, which claimed to champion democracy and the right to self-determination, revealing that Lampson was not merely a diplomat, but rather an instrument for asserting British hegemony over Egypt.
