The environmental and psychological backgrounds in which Caliph Umar Ibn Al-Khattab grew up had a clear influence on his behaviors after assuming the caliphate of Muslims. Furthermore, many of the events that shaped his personality before and after Islam became evident before his accession to the caliphate, particularly in terms of his strictness, decisiveness, and sternness in dealing with events and people. It can also be said that the stance of Caliph Umar Ibn Al-Khattab towards non-Arabs can be thoroughly analyzed through the lens of Social Identity Theory, the Social Field, as well as the theory of Symbolic Capital. His attitudes towards non-Arabs were driven by a desire to maintain the cohesion of the Arab group that formed the foundation of the Islamic state. This led to their preference in the distribution of power and resources on one hand, and to the establishment of boundaries between Arabs and non-Arabs on the other, including restrictions on intermarriage, such as requiring compatibility in marriage. Although these policies, which might seem discriminatory on the surface, were part of an attempt to rebuild a social hierarchy similar to that which prevailed before Islam, but recontextualized in a religious framework to preserve Arab identity and Islamic Arab dominance.
