The Problematic of the Conflict Between Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him and His Family) and Quraysh
in Contemporary Orientalist Thought: A Critical Study of Robert Spencer’s Views

This research critically examines and analyzes the positions of the Orientalist Robert Spencer on the historical conflict between the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his household) and the Quraysh, as presented in his book The History of Jihad. It aims to uncover the contradictions inherent in the methodology he employed and the inconsistencies contained within his arguments by comparing his propositions and analyses with authentic Islamic sources.
The central problem of the research lies in the methodological contradiction upon which Robert Spencer's work is based. In his initial proposition, he rejects the historical credibility of Islamic sources, even describing them as such, only to subsequently and selectively refer back to them. He extracts events and narratives from these very sources to use as tools for proving his preconceived hypotheses about Islam and early Islamic history. This renders his reading closer to ideological discourse than to objective historical research.
This study follows the chronological development of the Quraysh's conflict with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his household) through five main stages: starting from the Meccan period, passing through the incidents at Nakhlah and Badr, the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, and concluding with the Conquest of Mecca. At each stage of the research, the author presents the narrative offered by Robert Spencer and then subjects it to critique and analysis, assessing its consistency with the established ethical principles of the Prophet Muhammad and with the historical context. The study also highlights the contemporary political and intellectual context within which this discourse operates and its connection to some currents of neo-Orientalist discourse.
The research concludes that Robert Spencer's reading suffers from several profound methodological issues, the most prominent of which are: selectivity in choosing narratives, extracting parts of events from their contexts, focusing on weak reports, and the direct projection of contemporary political concepts onto a different historical reality. In contrast, a careful examination of the sources using Islamic critical tools reveals a more balanced picture of conflict management—a picture based on strategic wisdom, steadfast adherence to ethical principles, political flexibility, which ultimately resulted in achieving historical interests and successful social integration.
